FALL JEWELRY TRENDS 2016: BOLD STATEMENT PIECES

The fall runways were full of rich jewel toned colors which happen to be the perfect backdrop for statement jewelry for Fall. Ellie Saab featured standout, oversized chandelier earrings, but only on one ear.

STATEMENT NECKLACES & LOTS OF CHAINS

Versace sprinkled their show with layers of chains, large link long chains and chunky chokers.

GOLD MEDALLIONS, POCKET WATCHES & MORE CHAINS

My favorite show for jewelry was John Galliano Fall 2016 Ready to Wear. His catwalk was full of gold medallions and pocket watches hanging from gold chains in an array of lengths, from Choker to Opera.

It perfectly illustrates our mantra: Making Antique Jewelry Wearable. Combining today’s fashion with antique jewelry (or what looks to be) to create a one-of-a-kind look.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: JEWELRY EDITION

Here are some of our pieces, actual antique pocket watches and chains that you can combine with your fall cashmere and silk to create your own one-of-a-kind look.

ANTIQUE 15 KT GOLD POCKET WATCH & LONG GUARD CHAIN

This is a heart-shaped Antique Demi-Hunter pocket watch in 15 Kt rose gold.

The versatility comes from the fact that there are two distinct sides to the Demi-Hunter or hunter pocket watch one. With the dial side out, you get the classic look of a pocket watch. With the cover side out, it looks more like a gold locket. We are showing it with an Antique Victorian rose gold guard chain. At 57 inches, you can double or triple it to get the layered chain look. The chain has a dog clip/swivel clip which makes it really easy to change what you wear on the end of it.

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN “SHOOTING STARS” POCKET WATCH

if you love the chain and pocket watch Galliano shown on the model wearing the sheer skirt and white angora sweater, you will love our version. Below is our antique shooting stars demi-hunter pocket watch paired with our antique Victorian mid-length gold link chain.

JEWELRY AND NAIL COLOR: FAVORITE PAIRINGS

Nail color is a great way to try out the latest trend, get in the mood for a new season, or compliment your latest jewelry acquisition. Below is one of our favorite pairings.

OUR ITEM OF THE WEEK: ANTIQUE GOLD BYPASS BANGLE

This pretty 14 ct gold bangle is a recent addition to our Victoriana collection and is available at Sugar et Cie. It is in the Etruscan Revival style from the Victorian period and is called a bypass bangle. You can see the lovely work in the details: the gold granulation, the fine wire work and the bloomed gold, all characteristics of the Etruscan Revival style.

We’ve paired this bangle with Deborah Lippmann’s Cleopatra in New York. It’s a black lacquer studded with gold which can be worn on its own or as a second coat over another color.

The bypass bangle has always been popular. The clean modern form of the body of the bangle is a nice contrast to the elaborate terminal on each end of the bracelet, which is similar in shape to a royal scepter.

DEBORAH LIPPMANN’S GLITTER COLLECTION

I haven’t always been a fan of glitter nail polish, but Deborah Lippmann has won me over with her sophisticated palette of glitter nail lacquers. What makes them different? The glitter components are octagonal in shape and made up of small and large pieces. The effect is chic, almost bespoke and doesn’t look like my six year old niece gave me a manicure.

Not quite ready for a black-based lacquer? Try Lippmann’s Ruby Red slippers, Boom Pow Pow, or any of the 23 polishes in her glitter collection.

VICTORIAN DIAMOND STAR BROOCH: A LUST HAVE!

We just got back from a buying trip and picked-up a lot of great things which you will be seeing on our site this week and next. One item in particular has been on our must have list for a while: an antique star brooch set with old mine cut diamonds in silver over gold from the Victorian Period.

ROYAL TRENDSETTERS

The minute I saw this portrait of Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”) of Austria (1837-1898) wearing diamond stars pinned into her hair, I was hooked.

According to the Schloss Schönbrunn palace and the Sisi Museum, the Empress commissioned Rozet & Fischmeister and other court jewelers to have multiple stars made. Some were 8 points, some were 10 points, and some had a pearl at the center.

Empress Elisabeth was not the only royal to favor wearing diamond stars. Queen Alexandra of England (1844-1925) had a set. There are numerous pictures of her wearing her stars pinned across the bodice of her dress. Just like Sisi, she was also a royal fashion trend-setter. Everything she did and wore was copied by society’s elite. The collier de chien (multiple strands of pearls and diamonds in the form of a collar necklace) is still associated with Alexandra to this day.

HAIR JEWELS ARE HAVING A MOMENT – OKAY, MAYBE MORE THAN A MOMENT

Once worn only for special events (wedding e.g. bridal jewelry), you can now find more and more women with a bit of sparkle in their hair. It’s hard to pick up a copy of Vogue, ELLE, Lucky, etc. and not find a feature or story about something jeweled for one’s tresses.

Believe it or not jeweled hair pins can be worn with jeans and a Tee, think a single tiny diamond star pin. Or with a cocktail dress: try two Art Deco Diamond Barrettes just above the ear to pull back your waves (e.g. channeling Veronica Lake). It’s all in how you style it. The below is from backstage at Valentino…

IS PINK THE NEW BLACK?

Icy pastels, usually reserved for Spring, were part of the color palette this past Fall/Winter. Well, Spring is approaching and pink is still here. Models pranced down the runway at Spring Fashion Week covered in pink from head to toe (Alexander Wang, Balmain, Isabel Marant, Balenciaga). All shades were present from sugary bubble gum to fuchsia to the palest of pales. Not a big fan of all over pink? Add hints and pops of the color through your accessories: shoes, bags, jewelry, etc. Here are some of our top picks.

A new discovery, for me anyway. Julep nail polish seems to be free of nasty chemicals. They call it 4-Free. It doesn’t contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, DBP, or toluene.

CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THIS SEASON’S METALLICS?

Neither can we. And apparently neither could Jason Wu, Lanvin, Altuzarra, and Tom Ford. All incorporated metallic shimmer and shine into their Spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear Collections.

HOW TO WEAR IT

A great way to bring metallics out of the dark of night and into the daylight, is to mix an ultra-feminine, typically evening, metallic with a contrasting menswear piece. This look straight off of the runway from Altuzarra, is a great example: a menswear “long underwear” knit top paired with a metallic silk, high-slit, narrow skirt.

OUR CURRENT FAVORITE: ROSE GOLD

I’m fighting a losing battle trying to resist this liquid, rose gold, sequinned skirt from Haute Hippie. We’ve paired it with a menswear inspired, white linen, button-down shirt, from Frank & Eileen. Roll up the cuffs and tuck it or belt it in. The boots are Saint Laurent’s Paris Ankle Boots in Cognac.

Play up the rose gold by accessorizing it with your favorite rose gold jewelry. I especially love the patina of antique gold. Slip on this rose gold and old European cut diamond snake ring from our Collections.
